Understanding Acoustic Emission Testing for FRP Vessels

Acoustic Emission (AE) testing is a non-destructive evaluation technique used to monitor structural integrity in composite vessels during proof pressure testing or in-service operation.

Sensors strategically attached to the exterior of an FRP tank listen for high-frequency acoustic waves generated by micro-cracking, fiber breakage, or resin matrix delamination under mechanical stress.

By detecting structural degradation early before visible surface cracking occurs, AE testing helps reliability engineers plan proactive maintenance and extend vessel operating lifespans safely.
